It is almost always men who kill women. In 88.5% of cases, the perpetrator is a man. Only 2% of women were killed by another woman. The geographical distribution is substantially homogeneous across different areas of the country. Source: Inquiry on Femicide – Ministry of Justice 2012-2016

The analysis of femicides reveals extremely violent and primitive methods. The murders often follow hand-to-hand struggles, predominantly using knives, which reflect an extraordinary rage and are easily accessible in domestic settings. Source: Inquiry on Femicide – Ministry of Justice 2012-2016

• 40.2% of cases: women are repeatedly struck with sharp and cutting weapons, and sometimes even suffocated. • 9% of victims are attacked and killed without weapons, through punches, kicks, and subsequent strangulation or suffocation. • 15.5% of homicides involve blunt objects, such as hammers and axes, used brutally and repeatedly. • 12.8% of cases: a firearm is used, often with multiple shots, despite a single shot being sufficient. • 18% of cases: the victims are strangled with electrical cables, wire, belts, scarves, shoelaces, or hands, and sometimes through pillows or plastic bags. • 3.3% of cases: flammable liquids and lighters are used, both to conceal already deceased bodies and to inflict direct harm. In many cases, the perpetrator attempted to hide the body. Among the methods used are also burning the victim's body. In other cases, victims are first placed in trunks or suitcases and then thrown into the sea, rivers, wells in isolated places, or among bushes. In a couple of cases, the victims were dismembered and placed in plastic bags, hidden in refrigerators or in the ground of the perpetrator's residence.

The likelihood of discovering the perpetrator of a murder is higher when the victim is a woman, precisely because of the particularity of these crimes - which mostly occur within family and couple settings - resulting in a limited field of investigation.
